Zombie Vocabulary
By Tom | November 27, 2008
So in the theme of restrictions creating creativity and my own desire to be doing things more directly related to the classroom- I have decided to start Zombie Vocabulary1. I’ll take a few words from Merriam-Webster’s word of the day and create a zombie2 themed use of the word that I’d use with my students (if I had them).
So to start things off here’s facetious- WOD from Oct. 14th.
1 Why zombies? I like zombies and I like the CC zombie pictures available in flickr and saw so many I wanted to use that I needed to make a reason to use them.
2 I may switch from the zombie theme if it gets boring so other theme suggestions are welcome.

I’m getting ready to write about the growing importance of Zombies in the cultural imagination as of late. It is really interesting to me how much valence Zombies have these days, and particualrly online. I’m playing the apocalyptic Zombie game Left 4 Dead, and it is truly amazing how much this game fits the moment and the ideas we have been throwing around. It is a team game, you have to collaborate to survive, and you are really embedded as much in an interactive film as you are playing a game–the boundaries are changing for the this genre.
Also, I saw this bumper sticker yesterday, and dediced I need it!
Anyway, all to say I love the zombie vocabulary essons. I’m all about learning through the undead.

Valence, eh? Sounds like another vocab word I need to work on.
I don’t know what’s got me in the zombie mood. I think maybe it’s a reaction to Christmas. I never have liked Christmas music.
Shame it didn’t occur to me during Halloween though.

Mr Woodward,
Why do you do Zombie vocabulary pictures to help people learn new words, and then make fun of me for using a 2 dollar word like valence? If this keeps up, I will find you and bring on a zombie horde that will help rectify this kind of erratic behavior. No one, I mean no one, messes with my very finely tuned vocab.
Consider yourself admonished!

Professor Groom,
I would never make fun of you.
I originally thought you were talking about valence electrons. I had to look it up.
Please do not rectify me, with zombies or anything else.
Sincerely,
A mere k12 plebeian
