So it begins #ds106

Jim’s doing a class on digital storytelling. The course is open and free. That means we can all play and assume multiple roles. This is going to be fun.

Iconic Clash

Take your two favorite movies. Make one iconic poster. For bonus points use only black and white.

Closet Art

Find the center of disorder in your house. Make it interesting. Make it beautiful. Make it art, if only for a moment1. Take a picture.

Tweet, Tweet, Bang!

Take an already existing tweet2 mash it up with an Audubon painting. Challenge yourself. It doesn’t have to be bird related.

Say It Like the Peanut Butter

Make an animated gif from your favorite/least favorite movie capturing the essence of a key scene. Make sure the movement is minimal but essential. 3.

—All images are from ffffound.com which is pretty much the best place ever.

1 Try not to make it as pretentious as I sound describing it.

2 I will never forgive whoever made that the correct term.

3 Here are some directions on how to do it with free software. Don’t the let the command line scare you.

  1. You are a master!!! Let it begin indeed, this is exactly the kind of pool of assignments we need to feed. It’s the idea of providing multiple possibilities, and folks clustering around the ones they choose that could become really interesting, and also help filter stuff if there are too many folks—which I’m not sure will be the case. Just these four alone are so brilliant, and I now need some help with thinking about organization. Are these image assignments? Mashups? Both, need I break it down? Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you are too awesome!

  2. Moreover, we both know blogging makes it real. Twitter is half-ass small talk, blogging is making a god damned statement 🙂

That said, when you were small talking on twitter you link to this:

    and this:

Which are two more assignments. History image mashup and finding art all around you, or something like that. These assignments need to be added as well, and I think we can pull a form feed from a Google spreadsheet into FeedWordPress, and have assignment prompts feed right into a certain category on the blog we define. how sick. So we can open up a call for assignment ideas 9with examples like these) for anyone to play. Which gets at your idea earlier, which i liked, but didn’t know how to execute. Really kinda crowd sourcing the class.

    Man, I am getting manic, I can’t stop….

  3. 1, 2, 3 are images. 4 is more than an image. I’ll call it animation.

It might be worth thinking about combinations of factors – something like format (graphic, photo, video, audio, animation etc.) and concept (minimalism/reduction, mash ups, synopsis etc.). That way people into video could do the video thing if they wanted but within themes or combinations of themes.

This is where faceted search would be cool or project posts with aggregated options under them.
