Rocks are going to REVOLUTIONIZE education! Just look how easily rocks cover all levels of Bloom’s! Remembering I write things on my rocks and it helps me remember. I can also use rocks as eco-friendly flash cards. Understanding Comparing my rock to other rocks demonstrates my understanding. Sometime I categorize all of my rocks. Applying I apply what I know about physics and use my kinesthetic intelligence to skip my rock. Analyzing I like to use conglomerates to help me differentiate between components and analyze the role of different composite pieces. Evaluating Sometimes I just sit on a large rock, quietly reflecting on my rock- thinking about how we are all on a large rock and stuff like that. Creating My rock can be used to make many things. I use it as a hammer mostly but I can stack my rocks into cool towers, use it as a canvas, make it into an arrowhead, or use to ground grain.

It’s worth thinking about how some of their responses parallel despite open questions and not hearing each others responses. The video is about 7 minutes long and has the comments of three teachers from Byrd Middle School in Henrico County.
It’s all in the processing. Ask students to make sense out of what appears to be nonsense. Take the Ask A Ninja “What is podcasting?” episode. Does it seem like gibberish? For sure. Is there a very definite underlying logic? Without question and that logic can be explained. That’s the type of thing I’d start them off with. It’s not that hard. It really does have a purpose and structure. I might move on to something like this. First this scene from The Royal Tenenbaums. They’ve got to make some sense of it. A simple question that involves a lot of processing and understanding. Make your own, have students make their own. I’ll also recommend Motionographer as a great way to be exposed to interesting video to use for this type of exploration.
I was sent this image earlier today and it is very similar to something I worked on1 with Milobo a while back. This image was made to be “a visual representaion [sic] of a Digital version of the new Bloom’s hierarchy.” I want to explain what I see as a fundamental flaw in how this image is presented and why it matters. In this image the application is static and is represented on only one level. This reinforces the idea that the Blooms level is inherent in the technology rather than a result of its application2. Let’s take Google Earth for example. It’s on the application level in the image. I’d argue that I can use it just as easily as a tool to create3, or to provide data to analyze4 or evaluate. On a lower level, I could use Google Earth to help me remember specific locations and facts about them or to understand how geography plays a role in military decisions at key battles. Google Earth does does not lend itself to that kind of limitation that this image forces. I could say the same thing with something a little less obvious like Twitter.
