Work This Week – Week 4

flickr photo shared by Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons with no copyright restriction (Flickr Commons) WP Upgrades & Feed WordPress Error WordPress 4.7 came out. It does some good things and internalizes the JSON API stuff. Upgrades went well on most of our installs. We did have some issues though. Feed WordPress didn’t/doesn’t play nicely with 4.7 and the fix has some repercussions with other things we use. The ALT Lab site also broke for a bit and I had to do a fresh install. Not a big deal but ate up some time. The anth101 site also stalled out for a bit because of a conflict with another plugin. Luckily, the latter two issues were restricted the admin aspects and viewers wouldn’t have been impacted. Empty Widgets? I had one blog on rampages that wouldn’t load the customizer. Everything else about it worked fine. Tim Owens from Reclaim Hosting ended up helping me out as it’s fairly strange issue where the customizer won’t load if there are no widgets in it. It did lead to the following list of error variables that I tend to test against. With a bit of work, it might be a useful list. I’ll have to think through what order makes the most sense in terms of likelihood of solving the issue. […]

Work This Week – Week 3

FI Bootstrap Collapsibles Divs Our Focused Inquiry people are building an online resource for first-year students. One of the things they wanted to do was to put a bunch of concepts in collapsible divs and be able to use a URL to link to a particular expanded div. The initial plugin they were using for collapsible divs didn’t allow/create IDs but moving to the Bootstraps 3 Shortcodes plugin go the IDs we needed. After that it was just a matter of adding a bit of jQuery to a plugin. I gave myself a head start with this post on Stackoverflow. I hadn’t known about the location.hash option previously. It is worth noting that if you don’t lead with window it will work in Chrome but not in FireFox or Safari. You can get the URL to trigger the div by copying/pasting the URL when you hover over the title on the completed element on the published post/page. https://AURL.COM/ficoursecontent/faq/#custom-collapse-0-1 The first number represents the particular group of collapsible divs and the second number represents the specific div. Both counts start at 0. FI Bootstrap Collapsibles Divs – Second Try There are always little things waiting for you. In this case, having auto generated div IDs results in issues if the order of the elements changes. The stuff still works, it just […]

Work This Week – Week 2

Flux Tower Data I’ve got some flux tower data. The chart above may mean something. I have no idea. I let Google make it. The stuff I want to do is a bit more complex. You can see elements of the interaction here and here. I’m also considering how much data I might be dealing with so I’ve got my eye on options that let you zoom and pan on large data sets. These javascript based interactive charts are a place I’ve wandered before because of my interest in explorable explanations. Text SetS I’m not thrilled with the look but I moved the theme to Understrap (another Bootstrap-based WordPress theme). I made a child theme and am using Gulp and SCSS for the first time. Not a huge stride but I haven’t taken the time to figure out the details behind making this work previously. It’s not hard but it was unfamiliar enough to be a speedbump I couldn’t afford in previous projects . . . just a bit too much additional load. While I don’t have anyone I’m working with, I am trying out various workflows to figure out if I can do some of this stuff faster/better. In some ways working alone makes that easier. I only have to agree with myself but I also don’t know if […]
