The U.S. Navy has a large collection of marine mammals that are used as military working dogs of the ocean. The Navy also studies the diving physiology, hydrodynamics, and sonar capabilities of marine mammals. Whale and dolphin sonar is studied because nothing can be developed electronically that could mimic these living systems.

- Semantic ablation: Why AI writing is boring and dangerous • The Register
Semantic ablation is the algorithmic erosion of high-entropy information. Technically, it is not a “bug” but a structural byproduct of greedy decoding and RLHF (reinforcement learning from human feedback).

- AI Is Not a Library: Designing for Nondeterministic Dependencies – O’Reilly
For most of the history of software engineering, we’ve built systems around a simple and comforting assumption: Given the same input, a program will produce the same output. When something went wrong, it was usually because of a bug, a misconfiguration, or a dependency that wasn’t behaving as advertised. Our tools, testing strategies, and even our mental models evolved around that expectation of determinism.AI quietly breaks that assumption.

Current has no unread count. Not because I forgot to add one, or because I thought it would look cleaner without it. There is no count because counting was the problem.

- Unsung heroes: Flickr’s URLs scheme – Unsung
This might seem silly. The user interface of URLs? Who types in or edits URLs by hand? But keyboards are still the most efficient entry device. If a place you’re going is where you’ve already been, typing a few letters might get you there much faster than waiting for pages to load, clicking, and so on. It might get you there even faster than sifting through bookmarks. Or, if where you’re going is up in hierarchy, well-designed URL will allow you to drag to select and then backspace a few things from the end.
