Minx Comics, published by DC Comics, focuses on girl-positive themes and images. As a life-long comic book collector (boxes, bags, and the whole nine yards), it has worried me the way women in comics have become hyper-sexualized. It’s difficult to find a female character who doesn’t seem to be popping out of her costume. Minx offers a wonderful alternative to the modern super-heroine. Pass this one onto your librarians!

This is great to see. Even the comics with good, strong heroines tend to undermine this with the art.

I agree Jim. The same can be said for the males who have unfathomable physiques, and thus can really distort the male image. But it’s more prevalent for the women, who are practically naked whenever we see them in comics. It also begs the question of who are the main fans of comics AND who are the artists concocting these images.
Good Point, Jose. I think it is widely accepted that comic books have moved from a fancy of youth to an adult market. Personally, I have collected on and off in my “adulthood”, but have found it EXTREMELY difficult to find series that have strong story lines and realistic art. I usually have to go to independent publishers.
Thanks for the tip! Our librarian has Plain Janes on her list to purchase for next year. This book, as well as American Born Chinese, is fantastic for a teenage audience. The artwork, which reminds me a little of Dan Clowes, is tasteful and appropriate. And just as Little Lit is a wonderful selection for younger children, the Minx graphic novels are exemplary for middle and high school students.
