Tagging Network Feed

del.icio.us network tag feed?

Vicki from Cool Cat Teacher mentioned something I hadn’t thought about before regarding del.icio.us networks. Wouldn’t it be useful to be able to create a rss feed based on your network and keyword(s). I know I can get a direct feed from my network but I’d like to be able to sort things based on keyword. I could then do some really interesting collaborative work in web sites without having to manually add anything (I know I’m that lazy). Maybe this is possible now and I’m missing something simple.

I’ve looked in the Network view and didn’t see it. Manually adding keywords above like http://del.icio.us/network/bionicteacher/history doesn’t work (although the page refreshes to taunt you into thinking it does work so you get all excited late at night).

I tried the link roll option and isn’t built in. I then tried to force it by manually editing the script and failed there as well (that could be through sheer ignorance though).

Finally, the other place it would fit perfectly is in subscriptions. Since you can subscribe to tags by user here it seemed like I might be able to put in history as the tag and network/bionicteacher as the user and get only history tagged items from my network. This didn’t work either.

So I’m stumped. Can anyone enlighten me? I’ve tried all my own wacky ideas, maybe it’s so simple I’m missing it.

  1. I’m confused (what else is new?). Do you mean when it saves like this: for:edtechtalk? Or something else I don’t yet grasp?

  2. Mrs Durff-

You can add people to your del.icio.us network so you end up with a feed off all their posts rather than just things they send via the for:whoever function. I tend to use that for sending key sites and I just browse my network links.

If I could set up keyword feeds based on my network I could then do some cool stuff. Like right now we are aggregating our internet safety links and using tags to drive a web site through the link roll feature. What I have to do now to prevent spam and maintain tight control over what goes to the site is create a second account just for this and then everyone logs into that account to add links or pushes them using the for: option (which then has to be added)- either way it’s an extra step.

Now if I could just have a one time add of the del.icio.us account to my network and then tell them a specific tag to use then all the extra steps would disappear but I’d still have all the advantages.

Maybe that makes more sense, let me know if it doesn’t and I’ll try again. 🙂

  3. The key for me would be to collect by keywords AND limit by user. That would enable me to filter things out that might cause problems. Spammers hit even del.icio.us and there are always false positives. You can see that at a proof of concept page I did using linkrolls and other rss feeds to make the whole page.

You also can have kids (or others) do things intentionally to mess with you. It’s easy to see the tag that a site uses for del.icio.us link roll and if you’re accepting from all users it’ll post automatically to the page. You could end up with some real issues.
