What’s much tougher—and exponentially more complicated for those working with the values of traditional journalism—is when I learn news from off-the-record sources, which is increasingly common across the league. This is when I find the immediacy to be tricky because rumors often masquerade as news and are transmitted without regard for whether they have been verified. There is a noticeable lack of accountability that seems to reside in the emerging Twitter territory as those who aren’t part of a news organization can use this reporting tool recklessly.

Seeing the rumors today that Delicious may be shut down by Yahoo makes me want to vomit. Ok, that’s sugar-coating it a little, but you get the idea. And it’s now been confirmed by Liz Gannes that the social bookmarking site that lead the “Web 2.0? movement with its open sharing infrastructure is going to shut down. I have been using the service since 2005 or so and have thousands of bookmarks. Some are just reminders while others are for more routine behaviors like checking certain news sites.
So, it’s time to save your links. Here are a few ways to export and save your Delicious bookmarks:

Harvard’s Jean-Baptiste Michel, Erez Lieberman Aiden and colleagues have been analyzing the huge corpus of literature that Google digitized in its Book Search program, and they’re uncovering absolutely fascinating information about our cultural lives, the evolution of language, the secret history of the world, censorship and even public health. This past weekend, I’d heard enough from mainstream American media about the latest PISA international assessment data comparisons of our kids to everybody else’s kids. According to the results of the 2009 test of 15 year-olds around the world, Garrison Keillor’s Lake Woebegone children are long gone and those left are all just below average. I wanted to know more about the assessment, the findings of the OECD, and how the international media processed the results in other countries.
